Author's note: U.S. Highway 101 is one of the nation's oldest and best historic roads. In the ripe 1700s, Spanish settlers started a stately main road that would over time nexus 21 missionary post churches and motion 905 miles (1457 km) from Baja to Oregon. This is the ordinal component part of a three-part sequence. In the early part, we explored the trail from San Diego to Los Angeles. This 2d cut describes the central, 383 mile- (616 km) slice of the El Camino Real involving Los Angeles and San Francisco. Within a linear unit of it are some of California's peak historied locations.

As U.S. 101 travels northward from the sprawled urban of Los Angeles, one senses the exhilaration that Fr. Junipero Serra and his missionaries must have veteran in 1769 as they blazed this highway to secure California.

Unlike Interstate 5, the state's primary northwestern/south mercenary major road which was sculptured from the remodel in super swaths, U.S. 101 hugs the parcel of land more than as the native linear unit paths it followed essential have. Motorists on 101 don't leave behind by towns, they overrun done them at a pace that invites geographic expedition. Many of the towns on the way haven't transformed much over the age. Much look-alike France's Cote d'Azure in landscape, environmental condition and culture, this "American Riviera" provides a paradisaic scene of the purple-hued Santa Ynez Mountains rising at the rear sun-drenched, south-facing beaches. This is so valued a place, that Santa Barbarans began protective it more than a 100 eld ago. Rigid regulations rule that homes and masses buildings stick to the "Santa Barbara Style" of architecture, typified by white stucco or clay walls, red tile roofs, and courtyards influenced by Spanish, Mediterranean and Morrocan shape...
